Children's Hospital Colorado

Children’s Hospital Colorado (often called Children’s Colorado) is an academic pediatric acute care hospital system headquartered on the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus near the interchange of I-225 and Colfax Avenue in Aurora. The system includes more than 600 pediatric beds across four hospitals located in Aurora, Colorado Springs, Highlands Ranch, and Broomfield. As a teaching hospital, it operates multiple residency programs that train newly graduated physicians in pediatric specialties and subspecialties. It is affiliated with the University of Colorado School of Medicine.

Children’s Colorado provides comprehensive pediatric specialty and subspecialty care to infants, children, adolescents, and young adults, generally ages 0–21 and in some cases up to age 25, across Colorado and surrounding regions. It also occasionally treats adults who require specialized pediatric care. The hospital is the only verified children’s hospital in Colorado by the Children’s Hospital Association. In addition, it operates numerous outpatient centers, clinics, and physician offices throughout the state. The hospital also maintains an American College of Surgeons (ACS) verified Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center and features a rooftop helipad for transporting critically ill patients.

The hospital’s origins date back to the late 1800s, when families traveled to Colorado seeking relief from illness due to the state’s climate. To meet this need, volunteers established the Babies Summer Hospital in City Park in 1897. Recognizing the need for a permanent facility, the group incorporated as The Children’s Hospital on May 9, 1908, dedicated to caring for sick and injured children from birth to age 16, primarily supported by charitable contributions.

In 1909, the organization converted a residence at 2221 Downing Street in Denver into a small 30-bed facility, admitting its first patients in February 1910. As demand grew, the hospital quickly outgrew its original site and raised funds exceeding $200,000 to construct a larger facility. In 1917, a new hospital opened at 19th Avenue and Downing Street in downtown Denver, featuring 100 beds and advanced medical equipment for its time.

After decades of expansion at the downtown Denver location, Children’s Hospital Colorado opened its modern campus in Aurora on September 29, 2007. Designed by ZGF Architects, the 1,440,000-square-foot (134,000 m²) facility included 284 beds, advanced pediatric medical technology, and family-centered accommodations.

On June 21, 2011, the hospital officially changed its name from The Children’s Hospital to Children’s Hospital Colorado to distinguish it from similarly named institutions across the United States. In March 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the hospital temporarily expanded its age range to treat patients up to age 30 in order to support overwhelmed adult hospitals, although it did not accept patients with significant psychiatric or substance use disorders outside its care scope. This expansion differed slightly from its usual upper age limit of 25.

In the 2022–23 rankings, Children’s Colorado was listed as the #7 best children’s hospital in the United States by U.S. News & World Report. In November 2020, the hospital also received donations of Xbox Series X consoles through a collaboration involving Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Microsoft, and Bill Gates, benefiting Children’s Colorado and other pediatric hospitals nationwide.
